Intakes for Higher Studies in Germany

German universities and institutes offer multiple start dates throughout the year. Understanding the main intakes and timelines helps you plan applications, scholarships, student visas, and travel efficiently.

Main Intakes (Universities)

  • Winter Semester (October–March) — Primary intake for most undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
  • Summer Semester (April–September) — Mid-year intake; fewer programs are available.
  • Short-term / Summer Schools (July–August) — Limited intensive courses for quick learning.

Institutes of Applied Sciences & Private Providers

  • Multiple intakes throughout the year (usually April, July, October).
  • Check program pages for rolling or frequent start dates.

Foundation, Pathway, and Language Programs

  • Foundation / International Year One: Common intakes in April and October.
  • German Language & Test Preparation Courses: Frequent start dates (every few weeks). Choose one that ends before your main degree orientation.

PhD and Research Degrees

  • PhD applications accepted year-round with flexible start dates.
  • Scholarship rounds may have fixed deadlines multiple times a year.

Suggested Application Timeline

  • For Winter Semester (October)
    • Research courses: February–May (same year)
    • Submit applications: May–July
    • Offers and documents: June–August
    • Visa and travel: August–September
  • For Summer Semester (April)
    • Research courses: August–November (previous year)
    • Submit applications: November–January
    • Offers and documents: January–March
    • Visa and travel: March–April

Tip: Apply 6–9 months before your intended start date. Allow extra time for German language tests, portfolios, or scholarships.

Deadlines and Important Notes

  • Program closing dates: Popular programs fill fast or close early.
  • Scholarships: Usually due 3–8 months before intake.
  • Accommodation: Apply as soon as you receive an offer; student halls fill quickly.
  • Portfolio / Auditions (Creative/Architecture): Often have earlier submission windows.

Orientation and Enrollment

  • Orientation occurs before classes start (late March for Summer Semester, late September for Winter Semester).
  • Complete enrollment, student ID, health insurance, and banking setup during this period.

Visa Planning

  • A valid Offer of Admission and supporting documents are required for your Student Visa.
  • Processing times vary; apply as soon as your offer is confirmed.
  • Check the DAAD and German Embassy websites for up-to-date guidance.

Which Intake Should You Choose?

  • Winter Semester (October): Best for widest course selection and campus life.
  • Summer Semester (April): Good for mid-year start; limited options.
  • Short-term / Summer Programs: Ideal for electives, catch-ups, or intensive learning.
